Why would I save with the Credit Union?
Saving money regularly helps to protect you from unexpected financial pressures and helps you to manage your money more effectively. Some people save in a bank or building society and some people even keep their money under the bed!
At Barrow & District Credit Union we provide local people with a safe and convenient place to save. Whether you want to save for something special or for those unexpected expenses, we have an account for you. You can find out more about our different accounts below.
All the money that you save in the Credit Union benefits our community. Members’ deposits allow us to offer responsible and affordable loans to our members who need to borrow. The interest we charge on these loans helps us to pay our running costs and build up reserves.
Additionally, the Board of Directors may recommend a dividend at our Annual General Meeting. All members are invited to attend the AGM and can vote on this.
We are owned by our members and we have no external shareholders to pay. Our members are our top priority.
You can deposit money in your Credit Union account in cash or by cheque (Payable to Barrow & District Credit Union) over the counter at our office, by standing order and by online bank transfer. You can also save by deduction from your wages, if you are a member of one of our Payroll Deduction Schemes.
You can withdraw your savings by bank transfer directly into your bank account or as a cheque, which can be cashed at the Post Office next door to our office. Notice periods and limits apply and you can see them on the How It Works page.
Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)
We are a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) so all your savings are 100% protected. Our How Safe is My Money? page has more information on the scheme and a downloadable guide produced by the FSCS.
Our Member Account and Christmas Club Account come with built in protection at no extra cost. Terms and conditions and age limits apply. Find out more on our Free Insurance page.
